In the last month of the year we put the Montis nursery in the spotlight. The nursery in Moerkapelle has an area of no less than 7.5 hectares spread over three locations. The third location is new and will be operational in April 2020. In 1987 Nico van den berg founded the nursery with his wife. Since 2011, son Niels van den Berg has also been involved in the company. The nursery is affiliated with growers associations Decorum and Addenda *.
The warm greenhouse
Our tour started in the hottest greenhouse at the nursery, the greenhouse in which green plants and the Calathea crocata "Candela" © are grown. Green plants are a new addition to the Montis quality range, including the Alocasia and the Philodendron. The cultivation of the Calathea has changed for Montis in recent years. Where initially a cultivation technique was used in which the length of the Calathea played a major role, there is now a demand for a more compact Calathea with a lot of volume. For example, they now grow Calatheas that are 40 a 45 cm long and previously had a length of 55 a 60 cm. The Calatheas are also set up more spaciously at the nursery, so that the plant has more room to grow and thus the quality is improved. In addition, various seasonal products are grown, such as the Campanula "Addenda" © (with which they are affiliated with the Addenda growers' association), the Ranunculus Sprinkles and the double-flowered Aster "Showmaker".Helleborus Niger "Christmas Carol"
A great contrast was noticeable between the warm greenhouse and the greenhouses where the Helleborus is grown. In addition to the temperature, the way the plants stand is also a big difference, namely in the case of the Helleborus on the ground. The colder it is, the better for the flower of the plant. Because the Helleborus is grown from seed, there are large volume differences. A labor-intensive sorting process, assisted by cameras at the nursery, ensures that the heaviest sorting is delivered to Decorum.Sustainability
Montis is constantly developing itself in the area of sustainability. For example, there is now a paper tray collar present and they are also working on a sustainable tray. They are also in possession of the following MPS certificates: GAP, PlanetProof and SQ and ProductProof. Sustainability also manifests itself in (the cultivation of) the plants of Montis. In this way they reuse the water and ensure the ideal growth of the plant, which results in high resilience.* Decorum combines the strength of over 50 specially selected plant and flower growers with the same passion for greenery.
