- Grower of the month: Nursery Verboom
Winter is approaching in the Netherlands. As temperatures drop, we visit a nursery that offers a beautiful assortment of garden plants during this time: Nursery Verboom. Owner Jos Verboom shared a lot with us about his unique cultivation methods and the beautiful assortment of Skimmias and Helleborus.
Special varieties of perennial plants
Jos Verboom's passion lies in cultivating the most beautiful Helleborus and Skimmias. Not for nothing are these plants nicknamed "Winter Angels." With their colorful assortment, they never fail to pleasantly surprise customers. " Helleborus are actually an underrated plant. It's precisely when all the other plants are in winter dormancy that this plant blooms beautifully," says Jos Verboom.
A Passion for Winter Bloomers
As we stroll through the nursery, Jos emphasizes the special characteristics of Helleborus. A perennial garden plant cultivated through tissue culture, the nursery grows four different varieties:
- Frostkiss
Distinctive marbled leaves, winter-hardy, and available in many colorful variants. Thrives well in warmth, provided the plant is in partial shade. - Specialty
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Features strong flowers in the classic form. - Niger
Known as Christmas Rose, it has beautiful white flowers and minimal foliage. This type is winter-hardy and has a long flowering period. Ideal for indoors during the holidays and can then brighten up the garden. - Orientalis
Also known as Lenten Rose and a bit different. Orientalis comes in unique flower forms, such as two-toned or patterned—everything is possible.
Another Winter Angel: the Skimmia
A garden plant that not only blooms beautifully but also smells delightful in the spring. Nursery Verboom propagates 80% of Skimmias themselves by using cutting material from the mother plants.
The available varieties include the red Rubella, white Finchy, and the Double Diamond (2 varieties in 1 pot).
As Organic as Possible
Sustainability is a top priority at Nursery Verboom. Pesticides are used as organically as possible. Predatory mites are deployed as natural enemies against spider mites, while biostimulants act as vitamins for the plants. All of this contributes to stronger plants and helps prevent pests and diseases.
