Flying sustainable

For optimal plant growth conditions, it is important to make the cultivation process sustainable. OVATA does this by collecting a lot of data. A climate computer, sensors and cameras give accurate insights. With a computer to monitor the quality they even fly over the plants, see in the video below. All this data allows the grower to adjust greenhouse conditions to improve crop performance. This optimises the energy and water balance to avoid wastage.

The good eats the bad

Besides collecting data, OVATA is also innovative with its 100% closed Water Life Cycle system. Here, drinking water from a mountain stream is the inspiration. All the water from the greenhouse is transported to a waterfall with pebbles and crystal. After this, the water enters a tank full of lava pebbles. The water sinks through the bowl of lava and a 'good' bacteria inhibits the bad, harmful bacteria and fungi. Eventually, the water is so clean that you can even drink it! Entirely without the use of chemicals.

Nursery OVATA does much more about sustainability. For instance, they focus on:

- Improving biodiversity around the greenhouse. On the piece of land surrounding the greenhouse, a flower field has been created, trees have been planted and tree stumps with holes have been placed. A way to attract natural enemies of pest insects. 

- Saving energy, the nursery is heated with residual heat from the RoCa power plant. This can be used to heat the entire greenhouse. 

- Cooperation with organisation Hope North Uganda: Help women in Uganda grow old without pain. To accomplish this OVATA provided 1,500 Aloe Vera cutting plants 10 years ago. The grower financed a field to grow these plants. Even after all these years, Aloe vera cuttings are still being distributed throughout Uganda.
