We traveled to our neighboring country Belgium (took all corona measures into account) to visit nursery Fikona. The nursery -that is in the spotlight this month- knows the origin of its name by a combination of Ficus, Koen and Nancy (the current owners of the nursery), is located in Koningshooikt. It is a real family business which can be seen by the fact that both son Yorick (in 2017) and daughter Quirine (in 2019) have joined the team.

Perfection in green plants

What started with the cultivation of Ficus Benjamina has grown over the years into a diverse range of ficus. The basic material of the Ficus comes from Costa Rica and is shipped to the nursery in Belgium. Once they arrive at the nursery, the plants are quarantined and then go through all the checks. After this, the Ficus get a nice place in the greenhouses of Fikona, where they are grown with care. In addition to the Ficus range, Fikona is also known for the cultivation of the Chamaedorea. Fikona is also the market leader when it comes to growing the plant in 9cm pots. They grow no less than 6 million plants per year in this pot size. Dypsis, Musa Tropicana, Nolina and boxwood are also part of the range of the grower.

Green looking future

In the field of sustainability, Fikona is a very progressive grower.
