- Grower of the month: Kwintplant

Celebrate the seasons with plants! That seems to be the motto at Kwintplant nursery in Poeldijk. Hundreds of thousands of plants leave the nursery every season, led by the Duijvestijn family. Brother and sister Linda and Edwin Duijvestijn gave us a tour of the brand new location on the Wateringseweg in Poeldijk.
We are in the middle of the autumn and asked Kwintplant which seasonal beauties are currently being grown at the nursery.
Bees and berries
Solanum pseudocapsicum has been one of Kwintplant's specialties for years. How does every plant get so beautifully full of berries? The (bumble)bees take care of that. As soon as flowers appear on the plant, the insects take care of pollination. The flower grows into a green berry, which eventually becomes a beautiful orange berry. Or in the case of the Capsicum, a beautiful ornamental pepper.
Kill your darlings
The cultivation of Dianthus has started. There is still a lot that needs to be done before it can leave the nursery next spring. The flowers that are now on the plant must be removed. They are picked by hand. This must be done so that the energy of the plant goes towards growing the root system. In this way, the plant will grow into a beautiful sturdy Carnation in March, with divine new flowers.
Everyday I’m fluffelin’
An autumn classic that should not be missed at the front door. It is the time of Chrysanthemum. At the time of our visit, the Kwintplant team was busy 'fluffing' the chrysanthemums. This means that all flower buds, except the main flower bud, are removed. A large flower then grows from the main flower bud.
True seasonal specialists!
Preparations for the spring season are already in full swing. The following spring favorites will also be available at Kwintplant in 2023:
- Osteospermum
- Senecio Senetti
- Felicia
- And of course Dianthus, in the 'I Love You' and 'Oscar' lines.
A colourful summer!
We have just left the summer, but the Duijvestijn family has not yet. For the summer of next year they will surprise their customers again with Platycodon, Pentas and Bracteantha, among others. So nice for the bumblebees and bees that can't wait to pollinate the next batch with Solanum!
