The summer starts this month, time to make it cozy outside. And how is that more possible than with bedding plants? A good reason to visit grower Gevers Plants in always hospitable Brabant. This grower breeds 15 different plant varities, like the cyclaam, pelargonium, osteospermum, calibrachoa and impatiens.
How it all started
Nard Gevers started a landscaping company together with his brother in 1964. Soon he discovered that growing was more his passion. He started with the cultivation of cyclamen and after a while the assortment expanded. Later on Alex, Nard’s son, has taken over the nursery, which has an area of 5,5 hectares of land. Gevers Plants employes 40 people, of which are 20 FTE’s.
Guided tour
Owner Alex took us for a guided tour on his nursery. In the beginning the nursery was a true seasonal company. Nowadays they work 6 days a week throughout the whole year. From various types of bedding – and seasonalplants in the spring and summer, up to cyclamen and poinsettia during the autumn and winter season. There is also a large variation in pot sizes, from the 6 cm cyclamen to the 23 cm mixed pots of bedding plants. Cyclamen is one of Gevers Planten main crops, they sell 2.3 million pieces a year.
From cutting to adult plant
Gevers Planten has regular cutting suppliers from different countries, like Afrika and Vietnam. They’ve made a big step in mechanization in the past 3 years, where the plant cuttings are planted mechanically and spread out wider, after that the plants get moved to the right place in the greenhouse by using an advanced transport system. Here they will grow to an adult plant, and will it find it’s way to the consumer in mostly Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The people behind Gevers Planten
A lot has changed since the 1960s, especially the mechanization. What remained is the people behind the product. Many employees started as holiday workers or trainees at this flourishing nursery and still work at Gevers Planten. Sometimes they have promoted to management or supervisory positions. It is nice to work here because of the family atmosphere and the varied work which this nursery has to offer.

Sustainability
Sustainability and the quality of the plants comes first at Gevers Planten nursery. The vents are fitted with insect netting to improve the shelf life of the flowers and, where possible, to keep Insects and diseases outside. The water is sanitized and natural enemies eat harmful insects and prevent moulds. The growing pots, transport trays, multi-use containers and cardboard are made of 100% recyclable materials to save the environment. Also has this nursery several certifications, including MPS-GAP and Global-GAP.
