Big green houseplants are a trend! Time to visit nursery Persoon Potplanten, a grower who cultivates a wide range of houseplants. Seller Jantine and business manager Quint gave us an inspiring tour. The nursery differences itself by using the cultivation of Monstera pertusum through mother plants, this makes them, together with another nursery from Belgium, unique in Europe. The company is always developing. For example, a collaboration has started with Plantanious nursery for the cultivation of even more wanted green plants.

Persoon PotplantenA true family company

Nursery Persoon Potplanten was founded by Arie Persoon in 1950. At that time only tomatoes and lettuce were grown. In 1980 sons Aad and John started growing green houseplants. Nowadays it has grown to a nursery which cultivates 18 different plants on 4,7 hectares of land. The team now has around 20 employees and has been a member of Decorum Company for 20 years. 

Splendid assortment of houseplants

A large part of the nursery contains Monstera pertusum mother plants. These are mother plants from which cuttings are taken. These variety has better climbing properties and larger leaves than the Monstera deliciosa, which grow from seed. The mother plants last for about 10 years and produce about 260.000 cuttings per year! Persoon Potplanten cultivates a wide assortment: the Monstera, Alocasia, Musa, Philodendron and the Strelitzia Nicolai in pot sizes 17, 19, 21, 24 and 35 cm. The newest addition is the Alocasia low rider, a beautiful variety with robust leaves.

A new cooperation with Plantanious

Persoon Potplanten has started a cooperation with Plantanious from January the 1st. This year was all about integrating both companies as much as possible. So from 1 January 2022 they can cooperate fully and create new opportunities. They complement each other nicely in terms of assortment. Besides the Ficus, they produce various container plants and other flowering seasonal products.

Biological controlSustainability is very important

The plants are cultivated on heated concrete floors equipped with an ebb and flow system. Independent screen installations ensure energy saving. Each plant requires its own temperature and humidity. The use of crop protection agents is minimised through biological control. Another example of sustainability within the nursery is the reuse of feed water and the use of residual heat from the neighbour. The nursery has been MPS SQ and Gap certified since 2015.
