- Grower of the month: Nolina
Nursery Nolina goes beyond cultivating beautiful garden and potted roses. Sales manager Peter van den Ham guided us through a colourful world during a tour of the extensive nurseries. Yes, that’s right - plural! In addition to roses, Nolina cultivates Clematis, Wisteria, and a unique combination of Agapanthus. And as if that's not enough, their focus is on sustainability and the well-being of the staff.
A glance at the assortment
Nolina is especially renowned for its potted roses, available in various pot sizes. But the assortment is even broader and more diverse. In addition to the beautiful roses, they also grow:
• Clematis; in various colours
• Agapanthus; in single or 2 colours in 1 pot
• Wisteria; with blooming guarantee
• Roses; with 2 colors in one flower.
Passion for People and Robotics
For the grower, it's not just about plants but also about the people who make it possible. A healthy lifestyle is a priority for the staff. They receive discounts at the gym, and an physiotherapist regularly visits to loosen up the muscles. Tasks are constantly rotated to prevent muscle strain, and fresh fruit is always offered. Besides the employees, innovative robots play a crucial role. Robots propagate and pot the cuttings in a uniform way, while a camera ensures the selection of the best cuttings.
A Green Revolution: Sustainability in Action
Sustainability is a way of life for Nolina. The greenhouses are optimally insulated and designed to be energy-efficient. What remains of the plants is not wasted but used as food for animals in local zoos. Even the electricity they generate is cleverly utilized. The released heat is used to warm the greenhouses. Rainwater is used for watering the plants. And CO2 is employed for the growth of the plants, which in turn convert it back into oxygen. Since last year, Nolina has been using dimmable LED lights. These provide exactly the right amount of light needed for the cultivation process. They also take care of creating their own cutting materials. This makes the nursery self-sufficient and environmentally friendly.
