Bergcamp
Grower of the month September
Welcome at nursery Bergcamp, where brothers Walter and Robert van den Berg grow gorgeous Cyclamen, Pelargoniums and Campanulas. A family business where quality is paramount, employees work with pleasure and where the customer comes first.
History
It all began in 1965, when the family started growing vegetables and grapes. In 1980 the potted plants, Pelargonium and the Cyclamen were added. Today, the nursery has no fewer than three branches with a total of 5.2 hectares of land in De Lier, with the cyclamen as its main product.
Assortment
As soon as you step into the nursery, a palette of colors greets you. We are now in the Cyclamen season and this is clearly visible in the greenhouse. Apart from Cyclamen, the Pelargonum and later the Campanula are grown in the spring. The last mentioned in cooperation with Addenda®. Cyclamen has been a main product for years, and since a few years the assortment has been extended with various new product lines, such as the Victoria, the new Edge, the Merengue and the Petticoat. Now even a scented Cyclamen, Odora, has been added to the quality range. Water: “Not everyone knows, but Cyclamen are also very suitable for garden and terrace. Breeders have been working on this for years. We have selected the best varieties from the greenhouse for the 'Garden collection'. The Cyclamen of the Garden collection can tolerate temperatures between -3 and 30 °C degrees.” In addition, they try to distinguish themselves by annual renewal, resulting in the introduction of 2 new varieties, the Crayon and the Edge.
Quality
A calm cultivation development is paramount to ensure a good quality Cyclamen. Bergcamp’s goal is to always belong to the best Cyclamen growers. The total grow time of the plant takes about 6 months. The cuttings that arrive at the nursery are 10 weeks old, and grow at Bergcamp for another 16 to 20 weeks, depending on the variety. By allowing the plant to grow quietly, providing sufficient nutrition and light, high quality can be ensured. Did you know that a well cultivated Cyclamen also develops one flower per leaf? What you do not see, the most important part, is the root system of the plant. Bergcamp has developed a separate pot especially for the root system, which is able to drain excess water more effectively. This way the plant gets the right amount of water, which in turn contributes to Bergcamp's high quality standards.
Pleasant working environment
High job satisfaction and a self-managing team are very important at Bergcamp. “We look at what our employees like and which work suits them best”, according to Walter van den Berg. The family feeling and the team spirit is noticeable on the work floor. Everyone helps each other where necessary. In total, Bergcamp has 10 full-time employees and 6 part-time employees.
Sustainability
Walter and Robert grow in a so-called cold culture, which means that the greenhouse does not need to be heated much. The plants are watered through a closed system, and excess water is drained away and reused. The plants are watered by means of a closed system; excess water is discharged and reused. The waste is carefully separated and recycled. All pots are made of recycled plastic. In order to keep the polder and the surrounding area dry during heavy rainfall, a Rainlevelr is used. The grower receives a notification at an app if heavy rain is predicted. In this way, the grower can release water from the basin into the polder at an early stage so that the basin can be used as an extra water storage facility during heavy showers. The nursery has various certifications such as MPS-Gap.
