Grower of the month November
Kwekerij René Boers

The time of the helleborus has come! A good reason to visit Kwekerij René Boers in the south of the Netherlands. A beautiful nursery where the Helleborus Gold Collection® is grown. Annelies (sales) gave us a warm welcome and a tour on the two locations where they cultivate the plants. We even got a sneak peak of new varieties that will be on the market soon!

Kwekerij rene boersHow it all started

The Helleborus Gold Collection® is a productline that originated at a breeder over 40 years ago. There are now many varieties on the market that are distinctive in quality, free of viruses and can guarantee 100% flowering. Everything to assure the consumer of a plant they can enjoy for years.

Nursery René Boers was founded in 1995 and grew radishes in the first year. The grower switched to ball Chrysanthemums, Osteospermum and cut Chrysanthemums a few years later. More than 15 years ago, he started growing the Helleborus Gold Collection® and he liked it so much that it became his main product. Meanwhile, Kwekerij René Boers has expanded throughout the years, and at this time  they have 2 different locations. Both locations contain 1.5 hectares of greenhouses and an outdoor area of 11.5 hectares in total. There are 10 permanent employees and during the main season this number increases to 50 employees.

Assortiment rene boersA beautiful winter plant of excellent quality

"All our hellebores can tolerate frost. It is a real winter plant. When it freezes hard, the plant will go limp, but as soon as the temperature rises above 0°, the plants will just rise up again", says René Boers. More than 20 different species are grown in pot sizes 10.5, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 cm. There are even species that flower from October to March, which is a flowering period of 6 months!

Many hellebores are grown from seed. This is not the case with the Helleborus Gold Collection®. These are created in a laboratory from tissue culture. Every year they look 2 to 3 years ahead for new varieties. This year, for example, the new hellebores Gold Collection® Ice 'N Rosés was added to the range. A Hellebores with bright red or pink flowers that you can put anywhere in the garden or pot. Some hellebores do not like direct sunlight, but Ice 'N Rosés does.

Everything for a sustainable future

The nursery is FSI Compliant, and has MPS-A and MPS-GAP certifications. The pots are carbon free and for next year the plant trays are also on the schedule.
